50 marketing mistakes / Mistake #36
Mistake #36 of 50Don’t blindly trust AI.
Check names, facts, dates, prices, links and claims before you publish anything.
What it costs you
AI doesn’t know your business. You do.
AI is fast. It writes a great first draft.
It’s also confident about things it made up.
A wrong date. A price you don’t charge. A phone number that’s off by one digit. A “voted best in town” that nobody ever voted on.
It sounds right. That doesn’t make it right.
And when it goes out, it doesn’t go out under AI’s name. It goes out under yours.
A real example
Open Saturdays
A dental office asks AI for a back-to-school email: book the kids’ cleanings before the rush.
The draft looks great. Friendly, short, a clear ask. It goes out five minutes later.
It also says the office is “now open Saturdays.”
It isn’t.
Monday morning, the front desk spends an hour calling parents back to explain.
Nobody read it before it went out.
A two-minute read would have caught it. Instead, the first thing a lot of parents learned from that email was something that wasn’t true.
Why it happens
Why nobody checks
AI writes the draft. You’re still the owner.
Do this instead
Check it like your name is on it.
Because it is. Before anything goes out, read every line. Anything that could be wrong, check against something real: your calendar, your price list, your customer file.
| Check | Against |
|---|---|
| Names | Your customer file, not AI’s guess at the spelling |
| Dates and hours | Your real calendar and your real hours |
| Prices | Your current price list |
| Phone numbers and links | Call the number. Click the link. Every time. |
| Claims | Did it really happen? “Voted best” by who? |
| Reviews, quotes and results | Real ones only. Never let AI make them up. |
| Private information | Never paste in account numbers or anything a customer told you in confidence |
AI can type. It can’t vouch for you. That part is your job, every time.
Do this today
- 1
Pull up the last thing AI helped you write that went out.
- 2
Check every name, date, price, phone number and link in it.
- 3
Write a short list of the facts you use most: hours, address, phone, prices, website.
- 4
Paste that list into your next AI ask, and still read the draft out loud before you hit send.
Let AI do the typing. Never let it do the checking.
