50 marketing mistakes / Mistake #38
Mistake #38 of 50Don’t ask AI only to create. Ask it to criticize.
Give it your email and ask, “What’s wrong with this?” Give it your offer and ask why someone would ignore it.
What it costs you
Nobody tells you what’s wrong.
You wrote the email. Your spouse says it’s great. Your employee says it’s great.
Of course they do.
Nobody wants to tell you the offer is confusing or the button is buried at the bottom.
So it goes out. It gets ignored. And you never find out why.
AI doesn’t care about your feelings. Use that.
Most people only ask AI to write. The better question is, “What’s wrong with this?”
A real example
The Valentine’s email
A florist writes her Valentine’s email. A pretty photo, a nice paragraph about roses, and a link to order at the very bottom.
Before she sends it, she pastes it into AI and types: “Tell me the three most important things to fix before I send it. Only three.”
It comes right back. No deadline to order. No prices, so people will assume it’s expensive. The order link is buried under the photo.
She adds “Order by February 10,” a starting price and a big button at the top.
She sends it that afternoon.
Three fixes, before a single customer ignored it.
Same florist. Same roses. This time, the email asked for the order.
Why it happens
Why nobody asks
A critic who never gets tired and never gets offended. Use it.
Do this instead
Make AI play the customer.
Paste in what you’re about to send. Tell AI who it’s for and what you want them to do. Then ask it to find the holes. Here are the questions worth asking.
| Paste in | Ask |
|---|---|
| Your email | “What’s wrong with this? Give me the three most important fixes. Only three.” |
| Your offer | “Why would someone ignore this?” |
| Your website’s top line | “Can someone tell what I do in five seconds?” |
| Your flyer | “Is my phone number easy to find? Is there one clear reason to act now?” |
| The line for your pen or magnet | “Is this about my customer, or about me?” |
| Your follow-up | “Does this sound pushy? Does it ask for anything?” |
Then stop. Fix the three things and send it. Use it once, like a second set of eyes. Not forty times, like a security blanket.
Do this today
- 1
Find the email, flyer or post you’ve been sitting on.
- 2
Paste it into AI with who it’s for and what you want them to do.
- 3
Ask, “Tell me the three most important things to fix before I send it. Only three. Keep my voice.”
- 4
Fix those three. Then send it, today.
Let AI be the critic. You be the one who hits send.
