50 marketing mistakes / Mistake #19
Mistake #19 of 50Don’t stop following up because someone didn’t answer.
People are busy and emails get buried. No response isn’t always no.
What it costs you
Silence is not a no.
You sent the quote. Good price, good plan.
And then… nothing.
A week goes by. Then two. You figure they went with somebody else.
So you let it go.
That might be the most expensive mistake in business.
A real example
The holiday party
A caterer sends a quote for a company holiday party. Eighty people. A nice job.
No answer. The caterer figures it’s a no and moves on.
On the other end, the office manager loved the quote. But she was also running payroll, hiring two people and fighting with the copier. The quote got buried in her inbox.
Two weeks later, another caterer called her. “Hi, just making sure you got our menu. December dates are filling up. Want me to hold the 14th for you?”
“Oh my gosh, yes. Thank you for calling.”
The second caterer wasn’t better. Wasn’t cheaper. They just followed up.
Same party. Same office manager. Only one caterer picked up the phone.
Why it happens
Why people stop too soon
Only one reason for silence is a no. Keep going until you hear it.
Do this instead
Follow up until they say no.
Every follow-up should bring something new: a photo of similar work, an answer to a question they didn’t think to ask, a date that’s filling up, or a simpler option. Never “just checking in.” Here’s a simple schedule.
| When | How, and what it brings |
|---|---|
| Day 2 | Email: “Did it come through okay? Here’s the one thing I’d point out.” |
| Day 5 | Phone call: answer questions, and ask what they’re thinking. |
| Day 10 | Email or text: a photo of similar work, or a note from a happy customer. |
| Day 20 | Handwritten note: short and personal, with your card. |
| Monthly | Short email: something useful, plus “Still here when you’re ready.” |
Keep every open quote on one list: the name, the date you sent it, the last time you reached out, and the next step. Look at it every Monday morning. You can’t follow up on what you forgot about.
Do this today
- 1
Find every quote from the last 60 days that never got an answer.
- 2
Put them all on one list, with the date you last reached out.
- 3
Follow up on every one of them today, with something new, not “just checking in.”
- 4
Put the next follow-up for each one on your calendar.
Somebody on that list is waiting for you to call. Follow up until they say no.
